The Wider Caribbean Region offers varied oceanographic and ecological conditions that are more or less favourable to the vital activities of sharks and rays. Some rays, for example, prefer the coastal and turbid waters of the continent, while the clear waters of the north are suitable for large sharks, which find their food there. However, knowledge of all the species listed is patchy and, despite the ecosystem services provided by these species and the threatened status of some of them, protection measures are inconsistent between territories.
